If you are looking at planning a romantic Valentine’s meal or a few days away with your loved one, then Kielder is the perfect place to explore. Kielder is a small village in western Northumberland and is located at the head of Kielder Water and in the north west of Kielder Forest.
The village is also 3 miles from the Scottish border. What’s great about this village is how remote and connected it is with nature, so it really can feel romantic when you visit there.
Romantic Idea #1 - Stargazing
Kielder is located in a designated International Dark Sky Park so this is an amazing opportunity to look at one of the starriest places in Europe. The Kielder Observatory, where astronomical events take place regularly, is a good place to start if you are a beginner and need a little guidance when it comes to looking at the right constellations in the night sky.
The experts here are very knowledgeable and can help you learn how to use a telescope or how to spot certain things with the naked eye. Equally a great place to go if you are an expert yourself!
Romantic Idea #2 – Check out Skyspace
The Kielder Skyspace is a sculptural artwork in a circular room, which is lit only by natural light through the roof opening. It is simple and fascinating, as Skyspace removes normal distractions, allowing you to focus only on the sky. You can reach Skyspace via a hike past Kielder Castle.
Romantic Idea #3 – Book a luxury cottage away
Relax with the one you love and a glass of champagne in one of the amazing luxury cottages that Grace Darling has to offer. If you have kids, why not bring them too. There’s plenty of different accommodation options and sleeping possibilities. It can be a really cosy and relaxing way to explore some of Northumberland, without the worry that you need to rush back home at any point.
Romantic Idea #4 – The bridge near Kielder Castle
You can book in a romantic meal overlooking the awe-inspiring views of Kielder Water at The Boat Inn at Kielder Waterside. You will have to book early though, as this place gets very busy, very quickly! It is open seven days per week. There are plenty of other snug pubs across Kielder you can also enjoy.
Romantic Idea #5 – Enjoy a romantic walk
Why not get your scarves, hats and coats on, and walk hand in hand from Kielder Viaduct to enjoy a romantic picnic on the big rotating “Janus” chairs on the north shore of Kielder Water. These are spectacular art installations, which can be found around the shores of Kielder Water and in the forest.
Each chair can accommodate two adults. The chairs move and can be turned to face any direction. If you want to make an afternoon of it, you can also shop at the Kielder Waterside Shop, which is open 24 hours. You can get some food and drink here if you don’t fancy taking your own picnic!
