Mark your diary on the 13th October 2018, for the Spittal Autumn Fair. If you are in the area around this time, then head over the Berwick United Reformed Church, (formerly St Paul’s Church), in Middle Street, Spittal, for a real taste of a traditional Autumn Fair with everything from tombola, to raffles, stalls and refreshments.
The event runs from 11am to 3pm and is a great chance for visitors to the area to get a feel for a country fair in this fantastic season. You can buy tea and a cake as well as chatting to some of the friendly locals.
What’s great is that this is a free event. While in the area why not see if you can spot a pod of dolphins playing off the coast? Many people have seen a playful pod come and visit the area at this time of year, so remember to have your camera ready!
Spittal itself is a seaside village situated on the south side of the River Tweed, opposite Berwick-upon-Tweed, and next to Tweedmouth. The village takes its name from a medieval hospital (try saying the word like 'hos-pittal'!) However, the funny thing is that no one knows where it was located, and no evidence links it to any particular ground. Some people think it may have stood near Spittal Hall. Interestingly, Spittal was once where many smugglers came in; it was also the centre for the herring fishery. It is a great place to visit whether this is your first visit to Northumberland or one of many.
Nowadays, this town is a typical seaside resort and a great place for families to come and spend a week on holiday. Many people enjoy cycling and walking in the town because there are some fantastic routes and views along the way! It is also quite dog friendly so if you have some dogs who love the fresh air, bring them along too.
If you are heading out for the Autumn Fair, then why not go for a stroll along the beach here too. Spittal beach is clean, with both sandy and stone areas. You can find small crabs under rocks, which is a great activity for the kids if you are having a family day out here.
While in the region, you might want to check out the cottages that Grace Darling holidays offer. The perfect place to stay here is called Island View, which is a charming property located in Spittal just a stone’s throw from the market town of Berwick-upon-Tweed. Just a short walk from the cottage is the Victorian seaside promenade and Spittal beach.
Inside the property is spacious, and can accommodate up to 6 guests over four bedrooms. You will even find a spacious patio area with table and seating along with a secluded garden. If you would like to book a cottage getaway for your Autumn break, make sure you book up in advance as these properties can get busy very quickly, especially at this great time of year, just after summer.
