Seahouses is a seaside village located on the coast of Northumberland. It’s a great location if you enjoy being beside the sea with plenty to see and do.
The harbour itself is a point of interest and offers activities such as fishing trips, boat trips and charter diving. It dates back to the 1700’s and for many years was a lime producing port. Over the years it evolved into one of the largest herring producer ports on the North East coast. Nowadays the port is a fishing port mainly for shell fish such as lobsters, prawns and crab. Crabbing is a popular activity for the kids to get involved in as well. Or you can organise a fishing trip with an experienced, knowledgeable crew.
The National Trust’s Farne islands are only a short boat trip away and offer you the chance to spy all kinds of wildlife living in their natural environment. Depending on what trip you opt for you can stay on the boat and view the delights from on board or disembark to explore the island. The tour guides offer a wealth of information about the islands and its inhabitants. They will also share stories such as that of local heroine Grace Darling and show you the site of the shipwreck that she recused passengers from.
During your trip, keep your eyes peeled for all sorts of wildlife such as puffins, seals and dolphins. The islands are most famous as a breeding ground for puffins also known as sea parrots or locally in Northumberland as “Tommy Noddy”. The puffin’s nests are like rabbit burrows and are clearly visible on Farne. Their breeding season is between April and late July peaking in the months of May and June. Out with these times they fly out to sea.
