If you’re really into your stargazing, which is something many budding astronomers love about Northumberland, then there is a ‘full moon party’ taking place on 2nd February which you’ll want to attend. Tickets are priced from £18.15 to £46.75 and the Kielder Observatory are running the event. They say, “Watch as we observe shadows cast through mountain valleys on the lunar surface, tracing shadows across the desolate landscape. As well as this of course there is the rest of the universe, of which we cannot resist telling you all about.” You can learn a lot about our nearest celestial body, the moon, and see it up close with some fantastic telescopes.
If you enjoy this, they also run some late night events throughout February where you can explore the night sky even further. The renowned Kielder Observatory is located in the heart of the Northumberland Dark Sky Park. At these events there are limited number of tickets – only 25 spaces in fact, to ensure you enjoy the maximum time at the telescopes. You can also enjoy the comfy two-seater 'moon chairs' out on the deck with blankets if you want to enjoy romantic views of the moon – something very different to do on Valentine’s Day this year!
If you want to spend some time with the family, you can enjoy a family guided walk at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre, Amble. This takes place in half term and you’ll need to book – it is only £3 per person. You should bring suitable clothing and waterproof footwear. You can explore and find out about local wildlife while taking in some fantastic views. There is also a lot of half term activities going on in The Alnwick Garden, Alnwick this month.
If you are up for a spot of gardening and helping out the local community, why not help the gardening team plant the snowdrop seeds at the annual snowdrop planting week? You can help plant 100,000 snowdrop bulbs during February half term, which is the fourth year of their mass planting at Wallington House. The gardening team will be there to show you the ropes and help you get hands-on.
If you want to be outdoors and take photos of the stunning landscape, why not check out the Landscape Photography Day held at Hauxley Wildlife Discovery Centre. Any level of experience and any type of photography equipment is welcome and it is £35 a ticket. You will be venturing outside so don’t forget your warm clothing!
