As the weather finally improves and the UK temperatures start to soar, many of us like to enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine in the sunshine.

Being on holiday in Northumberland with the kids doesn’t mean you have to miss out on this little pleasure; you just have to find the right place to go.

Here is a roundup of family-friendly pubs throughout the North-East that tick all the boxes in summer – fantastic food, a good selection of drinks, nice outdoor space and something to entertain the kids.

  • Three Horse Shoes Bar and Restaurant

High Horton, Northumberland, NE24 4HF

This is a favourite pub for both visitors and locals alike. There is an adult’s only beer garden to the side of the building and a huge, enclosed beer garden and park at the front. There is a large selection of play equipment including swings, slides, frames and the famous treehouse. There are picnic tables in this space too and you can order food and drinks to be eaten outside. There is fantastic quality in their food and all meals are cooked fresh to order.

  • The Beehive

Earsdon, Whitley Bay, NE25 0SZ

This pub feels like it is in the middle of nowhere, when in fact it is just a few miles from the coast. There is a secret garden which is accessed through a secret door at the side of the carpark. Once inside you could be anywhere. The garden is fully enclosed with a play frame and picnic tables and music plays through the hidden speakers. Food here is very good.

  • Gibside Pub and Beer Garden

Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE16 6BG

The beer garden here is the largest in Gateshead. It is only open in a Friday evening (6-9pm) and also on Saturdays during the summer. There is a very family orientated atmosphere and there is often a live band playing. There is a small miniature castle play frame and as the sun sets the candles twinkle on the wooden tables transforming the garden into something magical.

  • The Northumbrian Piper

Fawdon, Newcastle, NE3 2AH

This is a deceptively large pub with an even larger garden to the rear. The garden is complete with a play area for the children and food is good and reasonably priced.

  • The Lion and Lamb

Horsley, Northumberland, NE15 0NS

This is a traditional pub in the middle of the countryside for those who wish to relax in quieter surroundings. The food is fantastic and there is a garden with a play area that overlooks the river Tyne.

Blagdon, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE13 6DQ

Just up the road from Northumberlandia is this lovely little venue. It isn’t a pub as such but they do serve wine and beer and have a lovely outdoor space which is a real sun trap. It has its own ice-cream kiosk and a good children’s menu. The play area includes a play house and toys within its enclosed garden.

  • The Keel Row

Seaton Delaval, Whitely Bay, NE25 0QG

This is the place to go if you fancy a bargain home cooked bite to eat or drink in the sun. There is a beer garden to the front and a separate beer garden with a play area to the rear.

  • Anglers Arms

Choppington, Northumberland, NE62 5NB

This pub doesn’t have a play area as such but there is a park adjacent to the pub. It is definitely worth the trip here. The pub feels very traditional with lovely home cooked food.
