Events to Keep You Occupied in the North-East Next Week

If you are not sure what to get up to in the North-East next week, here are seven events to fill out seven days.

Make sure you put these dates in your diary to accompany a stay in the region.

  • Monday 6th February

The Commitments

Theatre Royal, Newcastle

The Commitments has just finished a very successful 2 year run in London’s West End. It features more than 20 soul classics performed live on stage, including ‘River Deep Mountain High’, ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’, ‘Reach Out’, ‘Uptight’ and ‘Knock on Wood’. The show ties together the hit songs with a story adapted from the novel by Booker prize winning novelist Roddy Doyle himself. Make a commitment to see The Commitments before it ends its run on the 11th February.

  • Tuesday 7th February

The Empty Nester’s Club

Gala Theatre, Durham

The Empty Nester’s Club is the story of Vicky Barret. Her story is filled with empty bedrooms, Fresher’s Flu, boyfriends, long goodbyes, motorway services and numerous trips to IKEA for cheap flatpack furniture. If you have ever flown the nest, or experienced someone leaving home from the first time, then you’re invited to the first meeting of the club.

  • Wednesday 8th February

Heaven Eyes

Arts Centre, Washington

Based on the novel by writer David Almond, Heaven Eyes is a gritty but poetic story about young people trying to make their way in the world. Three orphaned teenagers run away from their children’s home and set sail down the River Tyne on a raft. They get stuck and meet a mysterious stranger known as Grandpa. The story is filled with poignant moments and humour that will touch your heart.

  • Thursday 9th February

Priscilla Queen of the Desert

Tyne Theatre and Opera House

This is the tale of three friends on an unpredictable quest to find love, their outrageous costumes and one very beaten up bus.  The performance also features a whole host of disco classics that will have you dancing in the aisles.

  • Friday 10th February

T. Rextasy

Phoenix Theatre, Blyth

With his band, T-Rex, Marc Bolan catapulted himself to the status of rock legend. It has now been 40 years since Bolan died tragically in a car accident, but the band has remained as popular as ever. T. Rextasy have been performing the hits of the seminal band and have since became a tribute phenomenon.

  • Saturday 11th February

Shabby Chic Workshop

Wynyard Hall

Wynyard hall are offering the chance to breathe new life into old pieces of furniture with their shabby chic workshop. Led by Karen from Woodpile, the workshop asks that you bring along a small piece of furniture so you can learn how to turn an ugly duckling into a beautiful swan once again. Who knows? You may even go home and give all your furniture a makeover.

  • Sunday 12th February

Kids Comedy Club

The Stand, Newcastle

Kids aged between 8 and 12 years can enjoy storytelling, jokes, poetry and some stupid science (usually with some gunged involved). The adults can have a laugh too. This is something all the family can take part in and enjoy.
