If you are looking for something to kick the post-Christmas lull this January 2019, then a trip to Northumberland would be just the thing. A beautiful county, Northumberland offers everything you need for a detox and a fresh perspective, right after the festive rush. Why not book some time off work in the first couple of weeks in January so you have something to look forward to. Here’s just a few ideas of things you can do in January:

See in the New Year in a luxury cottage: One of the many Grace Darling cottages offers you the chance to cosy up and spend a few nights away with loved ones. In some of these properties you can find roaring log fires, fully equipped kitchens, cosy bedrooms and stunning views. All these properties are in great locations, so you can enjoy brisk winter walks when you are ready to leave the comfort of the cottage. Go away with a partner, or with a larger family, as these cottages can also be family friendly. Book up quickly, though, to avoid disappointment! These cottages do get booked up quickly.

Photography: There are some fantastic opportunities for photography in this region. If you love taking photos, whether you are a beginner or advanced, you can enjoy views of the countryside, beach or marshes in this county. Also, on the 27th Jan 2019, you can book to join the professional landscape photographer Jason Friend to learn how to get the most out of your photography equipment. This workshop includes outdoor photography, and you can find out more about it here, It is £35 per person, and you can book your places online. A great opportunity to learn a new skill for the New Year!

Star Gazing: This is a great time of year for star gazing. Even if you aren’t sure what you are looking at in the night sky, join Kielder’s night-time observatory to learn some great tips for star gazing. They say, “We have large aperture telescopes in each of our two turrets, and some smaller portable telescopes on the viewing deck. The guests are rotated so they get the opportunity to use each telescope as well as a tour of our brand new observatory, the Gillian Dickinson Astro-imaging Academy – with its suite of instruments aimed at imaging the universe. Observations depend on the weather of course, and if observing isn't possible our science team have a well-rehearsed bad weather programme involving other interactive activities – such as meteorites, pieces of the Moon and even Mars.” Find out more on their website,

Painting: The New Year is a great chance to learn a new skill, so what about painting? On 19th January 2019, you can learn all about oil painting here in Northumberland. This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience and beginners are welcome. All the materials that you might need are supplied.
