If you are in Northumberland for the Christmas season, you will probably want to know where the best places for a drink are. There are a fantastic array of pubs and breweries in the county, ranging from modern establishments to cosy and more intimate settings. Remember, if you want food as well, you will probably want to book a table in advance. These pubs get booked up quickly!
Here, we look at the cosiest pubs which you can visit this Christmas:
The Staith House: 57 Low Lights, North Shields NE30 1HF
This is an award-winning gastropub and restaurant on North Shields Fish Quay, North Tyneside, Newcastle upon Tyne. They do specialist guest chef nights, which are well worth a visit, but book in advance. One TripAdvisor reviewer said, “Very warm and welcoming atmosphere and great tunes in background. Food was very good and we particularly enjoyed the Crabcakes, Fish and Chips, Venison Pie (a proper pie and not just pastry atop some stew!), Steak and the perfectly cooked Cod. Also enjoyed a couple of sweets between us - Sticky Toffee and Treacle Curd. Very enjoyable and filling.”
The Olde Ship Inn - Main St, Seahouses NE68 7RD
This is a nautically themed pub and working Inn which sits above the tiny fishing harbour of Seahouses. The Olde Ship has high, traditional standards and provides delicious food and drinks all year round.
The Pheasant Inn - Shilling Pot, Stannersburn, Hexham NE48 1DD
This is a historic 17th century inn, which is run traditionally and is a hit with locals and newcomers. You will enjoy looking at the stone walls, which hold old photos of the community. The bars are polished and the fire is beautiful and welcoming. The house ales are - Timothy Taylors, and local beers from Wylam Brewery. In terms of food, you can enjoy fresh fish, game and mushroom pie and slow roasted Northumberland Lamb. The Sundays roasts are the best!
The Holly Bush Inn - Greenhaugh, near Kielder NE48 1PW
You can gaze up at the stars and then head inside this pub for a pint to warm up! If you play an instrument make sure you bring it along, as this pub often has informal jamming sessions!
The Cumberland Arms - James Place Street, Newcastle NE6 1LD
The Cumberland Arms has a great beer garden equipped with blankets to keep warm. You can also hug a hot water bottle, provided by the pub! The open fires inside are also perfect to snuggle up to if you don’t want to brave the cold!
If you want to stay in Northumberland this season, why not book a luxury cottage at Grace Darling Holidays. You can enjoy a home away from home at one of these cottages, which are fully equipped to suit your every need. You can book a romantic escape for two, or a larger cottage which would suit the whole family. Many are child and pet friendly, but check at time of booking!
