This bank holiday is set to be a dry one – and what better place to enjoy it than out and about in Northumberland. There is a lot going on this bank holiday weekend in the county, so depending on what you like, you could enjoy a stroll along the beach, a pub lunch, a BBQ or a visit to a historic landmark. If it does decide to rain, there are plenty of inside things you can enjoy, too. You don’t need to spend a lot of money in Northumberland to enjoy your weekend, as there are plenty of free things to attend with the family.
One of the most fun things your younger kids will love is the bubble train! This takes place at Ford & Etal Estates, Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland, and children will receive free bubble pots travelling on trains from Heatherslaw light railway all day. They are invited to blow their bubbles as the train travels, leaving a big trail of bubbles in the air around the train. It is a great experience and atmosphere, and a perfect way to spend a bank holiday with loved ones.
Prices to get on the trains are as follows:
- Adult - £7.00
- Senior- £6.50
- Child- £4.50
- Child under 5 - £3.00
The train runs at 11:00am, 12:00 noon, 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm.
The railway itself is a great outing for all the family, pulled by our steam locomotives “Bunty” and “Lady Augusta” or the diesel engine “Binky” between Heatherslaw Station and Etal Castle. It has a return journey of 4 miles. If it does rain, the coaches still keep you dry. What’s more, there is free parking available at Heatherslaw Station and Etal Castle. The Railway runs along the banks of the River Till where you can really soak in the beuatiful Northumberland countryside.
When you get off the train, a short walk across the footbridge takes you to Ford and Etal Visitor centre and the working watermill. Here you will find The Heatherslaw Tearoom so you can grab some food or a nice drink.
While in Northumberland, why not stay in a luxury cottage to make the most of the weekend. Grace Darling Cottages are fully equipped and some offer stunning views and great locations. You can stay in the cottage and enjoy day trips throughout Northumberland throughout your time there, whatever time of the year you plan on staying.
