If you’re in Northumberland this month, there is plenty to see and do in the Autumn season. What’s great about this time of year is the night sky – perfect for astronomers who like to see everything that the skyline has to offer. And this even includes the Northern Lights!
You might not think that you can see the Northern Lights in Northumberland, but the truth is that these incredible lights, with their stories and folk tales, has been seen before in this region, especially on a clear night.
At Kielder Observatory, you can learn about the energy that the sun releases and how this interacts with the Earth’s atmosphere to give us the marvellous light show known as the Northern Lights. Even if you are a novice, you can begin to understand why we see these beautiful lights and what they mean.
On special nights throughout the month, you can learn not only the science but also how to find the lights and when to look. You can enjoy a talk from an expert, and then a tour of the Observatory, where you can also see the telescopes and meet astronomers. They are there to answer all your questions.
The dates that this event is running throughout October includes:
Friday 13/10/2017 23:30 - 02:30
Monday 16/10/2017 20:00 - 23:00
