If you are visiting Northumberland this Summer, your trip would not be complete without a visir to Bailiffgate, an award-winning museum, with rolling exhibitions that the whole family can enjoy. Here, you can learn a lot about Alnwick and District, an area rich in history.
On the first two floors of the museum, you will find a collection of artefacts, documents, and photographs. On the third floor are exhibitions, which change throughout the year.
You will find this museum in the town’s Castle Quarter, close to Alnwick Castle and Garden. It was previously a church, and is a lovely setting for an afternoon out when exploring Northumberland.
Just some of the exhibitions you can see here through the summer include:
100 Years of Fashion Exhibition 6th April - 8th September 2019
This exhibition was opened by Stella Tennant, an international super model! She loaned the museum some exquisite gowns from her own collection of world famous designers. They sit alongside Jane, Duchess of Northumberland’s, evening gowns on display.
You will also find suits, handbags, shoes and hats – as well as Coco Chanel’s Little Black Dress, McQueen, Prada, Gucci, Valentino and more. If you really love fashion, this is the ideal place to visit this Summer.
Bailiffgate volunteers have also made some vintage replica clothes which allows visitors to try on the outfits and make a selfie. Volunteer Jane Mann said, ‘fashion provides a fascinating glimpse into our social history from rebellion to convention through austerity and extravagance: exploring our individuality and sexuality from Virginia Woolf to Madonna via David Bowie. And then I see a vintage outfit and think did I really wear that!’
For the children – “Museum Tots”
Museum Tots is Bailiffgate’s pre-school group, which allows children to learn about history through play. Children will be with their own parent or guardian, while trained volunteers will lead activities. Sessions will run during school term time, on the second Monday of each month, from 9.30am – 11am. Museum Tots Spring/summer sessions cost £2 for each child.
Talk: Alnwick’s Cholera - Families - Tue 2nd July 2019 7.30pm
Did you know that cholera hit Alnwick in 1849, and over 130 people died in a short space of time? This exhibition allows you to hear about the background to this event. The talk is given by Mary and Dudley George, who give an insightful look into this period of time. If you are into your history, this could be the perfect talk for you to attend.
